Fare Increases - Monday 2 August 2010

Bus fares for greater Christchurch, Timaru and Christchurch's Diamond Harbour ferry service will increase from Monday 2 August. These increases are due to up-coming GST increases, rising diesel costs and changes to government funding. Find out more...

Christchurch and surrounding areas are divided into three Metro Fare Zones. Fares vary depending on which Zone you're travelling in.

* Fares for young people: Young people under the age of 18 may travel at a reduced rate upon proof of age and identity.

Please note:

  • Young people under the age of 5 travel free when accompanied by a fare-paying passenger
  • Young people under the age of 18 pay approximately half-price for fares upon presentation of a Can Do Card or approved photo ID with date of birth.
Fares for SuperGold holders: Travel in Zone 1 is free upon presentation of SuperGold card for all off-peak travel between 9 am and 3 pm and after 6.30 pm to end of service on weekdays and all-day weekends and public holidays.
Zone 2-3
Which services apply?
Zone 2-3 covers Metro services that travel beyond the city boundary. These include:
  • Airport
  • Burnham via Rolleston
  • Lincoln (including Lincoln University)
  • Northern Star (includes Rangiora, Kaiapoi, Waikuku and Woodend)
  • Diamond Harbour Ferry

Fares for SuperGold holders: Travel in Zone 2-3 is free upon presentation of SuperGold card for all off-peak travel between 9 am and 3 pm and after 6.30 pm to end of service on weekdays and all-day weekends and public holidays.

How do you buy tickets?
For Cash fares, pay your driver as you board the bus.

For Metrocard, your fare is automatically deducted when you board the bus.

Please note: For cash fares, there are no free transfers within zone 2-3 and only one free transfer within 2 hours for zone 1. Metrocards offer unlimited free transfers within the zone purchased for the first 2 hours.** Furthermore, Metrocard offers unlimited all-day travel after two fares purchased (for the same zone).
