Can I pay for another person with my Metrocard?
Yes. Their fare will be charged at the equivalent of a full cash fare ($4 Adult, $2 Child fare), so it is cheaper for each person to have their own Metrocard. This 'cash' fare will provide only one free transfer within 2 hours.
Do I need an online account for my Metrocard?
No, you don't need an online account to have a Metrocard, but we do recommend setting up an online account allows you to easily check your balance and top-up online.
What are the Terms and Conditions for using a Metrocard?
You can view the Metrocard Terms and Conditions here.
Why is my online top-up labelled 'pending'?
Online top-ups are generally available to use on your bus or ferry within one hour, however in some cases there can be delays. We recommend topping up before your balance runs out or the day before your next trip.
Please note that the amount you have just topped-up will continue to be flagged as "Pending" in your Metrocard account until you next swipe your Metrocard.
What information do I need to provide to get a Metrocard?
You'll need to provide a copy of your identification with your name and date of birth if you apply online or can present it in person if you're applying at an agency.
You can use a driver's license, birth certificate, passport, Cando Card, or school identification card. We do not accept postal applications. See more about how to buy a Metrocard here.
How much does a Metrocard cost?
The cost of a Metrocard is $5. You will need to load a minimum $5 to activate your card.
What if my Metrocard is faulty?
A faulty card receipt is issued by the driver to anyone who presents a faulty Metrocard onboard the bus. This faulty card receipt will allow the card holder to travel free for the remainder of the day it was issued.
If your Metrocard stops working and is showing no sign of physical damage/tampering then we will replace for free. Just bring the Metrocard (or Faulty card Receipt) to the Metroinfo counter at the Bus Interchange in Christchurch CBD or to Te Ana Rock Art Centre if you're in Timaru. Please remember to bring some form of ID.
Please note: A $5.00 replacement fee will be charged for a lost Metrocard or one that shows signs of physical damage/tampering.
